Behind the Song: Roots To Wings

Every family has a beginning. Ours began with two young people, a dream, and a willingness to leave everything familiar behind.
We packed up our belongings and moved to Texas, ready to begin our lives as young adults.
We didn't know exactly what the future held. We only knew that we wanted to build something together.
A home. A family. A life filled with love, faith, and the hope that tomorrow might bring something better than yesterday.
Looking back, I realize that building a life isn't about where you start or how much you have. It's about the people standing beside you and what you're willing to do for one another.
There are sacrifices you never anticipate, challenges you never see coming, and lessons you can only learn by living through them.
And then come the children.
Suddenly, life becomes about so much more than your own dreams.
You want to teach them right from wrong, to respect others, to love their family, to have faith, and to understand that the choices they make will shape the people they become.
You do your best to give them everything they need, knowing all along that one day they'll have to find their own way.
That's where the title “Roots To Wings” comes from.
The roots are the love, values, faith, and sense of belonging we try to give our children.
The wings are the freedom, courage, and confidence to take everything they've learned and build lives of their own.
And perhaps the hardest part of being a parent is realizing that you can't fly for them.
You can only prepare them for the journey.
As the years pass, you begin to understand that the greatest accomplishment isn't what you've built for yourself.
It's what you've helped prepare the next generation to become.
“We gave them roots, we gave them wings.
Lord, let them soar on better things.”
I wrote this song looking back on that journey, from two young people starting over in Texas to the lessons, sacrifices, and blessings that come with building a family.
It's about where we came from, what we tried to teach, and the hope that our children will take those lessons further than we ever could.
Because in the end, I don't believe a parent's greatest wish is for their children to follow in their footsteps.
It's for them to go farther.
To dream bigger.
To live with kindness, faith, and purpose.
And perhaps, if we've done our job well, to build something even better than we did.
That's what “Roots To Wings” means to me.
